World No Tobacco Day May 31, 2008

With so many tobacco products to choose from, no wonder tobacco use is the second leading cause of death in the United States. No form of tobacco is safe and even non-smokers suffer the harmful consequences of second hand smoke. World No Tobacco Day is May 31, 2008. This is a national day to fight back against tobacco use and raise awareness within the community.

On April 2nd, some of Calvert County’s middle school students participated in a Kick Butts Day poster contest to take a stand against tobacco use. Noah Donahue from Northern Middle School won 1st place. Posters representing all the winning entries will be distributed to the area middle schools for World No Tobacco Day. Funding for this initiative was paid for by the Calvert County Cigarette Restitution Fund Program.

According to the World Health Organization, five million deaths occur each year due to tobacco use. This rate is expected to rise to ten thousand deaths by year 2020. What better time than now to have a voice and speak up before it’s too late?
