Important Information for Calvert County Residents

Free potassium iodide tablets (KI) will be distributed to persons living or working within ten miles of the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant at:

Patuxent High School
Saturday, May 17, 2008
9:00 am – 3:00 pm.

Distribution of KI on that day will use a “Drive-Thru” line. There will be no need to park or leave your car. One person may pick up KI for the entire household or workplace.

KI is an over-the-counter dietary supplement that protects your thyroid from harmful effects of radiation that may be released from a nuclear power plant during an emergency at the plant. If you live or work within ten miles of the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant you may obtain free KI tablets from the Calvert County Health Department to have on hand for emergency use when recommended by governmental authorities. The exact boundaries of the “Ten Mile Protective Zone” are described on the website of the health department at www.calverthealth.org, or you may call the health department at 410-535-5400 or 301-855-1353, extension 434.

If you are unable to attend the drive-thru distribution clinic at Patuxent High School on May 17, you may pick up KI for your family or workplace at the Calvert County Health Department, Monday thru Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.

In 2002, the Calvert County Health Department distributed 35,857 tablets by mass distribution clinics and pre-placement at schools, workplaces, nursing homes and daycares. The Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) extended the expiration date of that KI from 3/2007 to 3/2009.
