Birth Certificates
Certified Copies
Certified copies of birth certificates are available at the Health Department for births recorded in the State of Maryland from 1940 to present. In order to obtain a birth certificate you must be the person or the parent of the person listed on the birth certificate.
To obtain a certified copy of a birth certificate:
- Appear in person at the Health Department
- Complete the application
- Provide valid, unexpired, government issued photo identification
- The fee is $30.00 (Cash, Visa or Mastercard)
- Hours:
- Monday – Friday: 8:00 am – 12:00 noon
- Monday – Friday: 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm
Applicants who cannot provide valid photo I.D. must present two different pieces of alternative documentation. At least one of these documents must contain the applicant's current mailing address. The applicant will not receive the birth certificate the same day. The certificate will be mailed to the address displayed on the documents provided.

- Bank Statement
- Current Car Registration
- Utility Bill
- Lease/Rental Agreement
- Income Tax Return
- Pay Stub
- Letter from Government Agency
For Maryland births recorded prior to 1940, certified abstracts of birth certificates are available by mail from the State of Maryland, Division of Vital Records in Baltimore, MD using the mail in application which may be obtained from this Health Department. The cost is $24.00. Checks or money orders should be made payable to DIVISION OF VITAL RECORDS.
